All Taskers

Understand Your Worker Classification (AB5)

California generally uses the "ABC Test" (Labor Code §2775) to decide if you are an independent contractor or an employee. Some jobs and business-to-business setups are exempt and use the older Borello test instead. Lifestyle treats Taskers as independent contractors; read the Tasker Agreement.

City Or County Business License

Most California cities (or the county, if you live outside city limits) require a business license or business tax certificate for self-employed work. Check your local city hall website.

General Liability Insurance

Recommended for all Taskers, and may be required for some jobs. It covers damage or injury that happens while you work at a customer's home.

IRS Form W-9

Give your Taxpayer ID (SSN or EIN) on a W-9. The platform reports your pay on Form 1099-NEC (2026 federal threshold: $2,000) or Form 1099-K (payment apps: over $20,000 and 200 payments). You must report all income even if you get no form.

Set Aside Money For Taxes

As a contractor no taxes are withheld. You may need to pay federal and California estimated taxes each quarter, including self-employment tax.

Background Check Consent (FCRA)

You will get a separate written notice and sign a consent form before any background check, as the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act and California law (ICRAA) require. You have the right to a copy of the report.

Government Photo ID

A valid ID to confirm who you are.

Drivers (Rides, Deliveries, Moving, Towing)

Valid California Driver's License

Must be current and match the type of vehicle you drive. Towing and large trucks may need a commercial (Class A/B) license.

Current Vehicle Registration

Registered with the California DMV and in good condition.

Personal Auto Insurance

California requires auto liability insurance on every vehicle.

Rideshare Or Commercial Auto Coverage

Most personal policies do not cover driving for pay. Add a rideshare/delivery endorsement or a commercial auto policy before driving jobs.

Motor Vehicle Record Check

A driving record review is usually part of the background check for driving jobs.

Prop 22 Note For App-Based Drivers

App-based rideshare and delivery drivers in California may be covered by Proposition 22, which sets minimum earnings and other benefits.

Special Categories

Seller's Permit (Selling Goods)

If you sell physical goods (not just services), you may need a free seller's permit from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).

Live Scan Fingerprinting (Child Or Elder Care)

Care work for children, elders or dependent adults may require a California DOJ Live Scan fingerprint check, and TrustLine registration for in-home child care.

Contractor License (CSLB) For Jobs Of $1,000 Or More

In California, construction or home-improvement work totaling $1,000 or more in labor and materials, or any job that needs a building permit or helpers you hire, needs a CSLB license. Those jobs belong on RE Network, not Errands.

Food Handler Card (Food Prep)

If you prepare or serve unpackaged food, California requires a food handler card within 30 days of starting. Simple grocery delivery usually does not need one.

Pet Care Training And Local Permits

California has no statewide dog walker license, but some cities limit how many dogs you can walk or require a permit. Pet first aid training is recommended.

Beauty Services License

Hair, nail, makeup and skin services generally need a license from the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
